3 Easy Steps to Playing Guitar While Standing Up

When you first started playing guitar I’m sure you couldn’t play as well standing up as you could while seated. Maybe you still can’t do that.
No worries though, everyone goes through it and there are a few simple steps to follow to make it much easier on yourself.
Lets look at the obvious causes for this problem first:
*When you sit down you can lean the guitar towards yourself more, and thus see what you’re playing better. To learn how to play without looking down see my article:
*The angle of your guitar is different when seated, almost parallel to the ground compared to a higher angle when standing.
*Your wrist positioning seems completely different and you find your right hand floating around too much.
To solve your problems you just need to take three simple steps and start practicing more while standing up.
First: When you play in a seated position rest the guitar on your left leg instead of right (assuming you’re not a lefty, otherwise just swap around), and rest your left foot on something about the same height as a shoe-box. Doing this will not only make it easier to get used to the different angle of the guitar but it will put your wrists in a better position to play faster easily.
Second: Adjust your strap so that the angle of the guitar is similar to when you play in the position described above. Don’t let it hang too low, you have to be able to play comfortably while standing up straight. Anywhere where you can get about a 45 degree angle is good.
Third: Learn not to look down. This is harder than it seems, but with some effort it won’t be too challenging. To make this really easy on yourself, sit in front of a mirror. That’s it. Just sit in front of a mirror and watch yourself playing, this way you learn to stop looking down but you can still see what you’re doing. As time goes on you will look at what you’re doing less and less.
